    Request for Information (RFI)
Purpose: The United States Coast Guard (USCG), Aviation Logistics Center (ALC), Short Range Recovery (SRR)/H-65 aircraft division is issuing this request for information (RFI) for market research purposes to identify operating heat and mass flow properties of the MH-65 engine compartments during normal Coast Guard operations and information on technologies to reduce the engine compartment temperatures to allowable levels. Any final solution offered will be accompanied by a validated computational fluid dynamic (CFD) analysis, a computer 3D model of each engine installed in its respective compartment, and all test data used in the project.
Background: Each MH-65 engine compartment (2 engines - left and right) houses an Arriel 2C2CG turboshaft engine that employ a 500 cubic feet per minute (CFM) exhaust fan powered by the power turbine to help cool the compartment. Each engine is capable of producing more than 1000 shaft horsepower (SHP) during single engine operations (rare) and limited to approximately 700 SHP in twin engine operation (most common mode of operation). The engines are housed by a metallic firewall and composite cowlings. The metallic firewall (forward, aft and center) is titanium and the cowlings that open (left and right), and fixed cowling (top over both engines) are carbon fiber and honeycomb laminate structures. See below photo for reference. Heat damage has been noted on some engine control and monitoring harnesses, near the engine hot section and structural components within the confined space, near the engine exhaust pipe. The maximum continuous temperature for control and monitoring harnesses is 160 degrees(°) Celcius (C) and a transient (30 minutes) of 180° C. For unprotected structure, the maximum continuous temperature is 150° C and the transient (5 minute) limit is 200° C. For protected structure, the temperatures are 200° C and 250° C respectively. Coast Guard testing and damaged compo...
