DESCRIPTION:
The Material Measurement Laboratory is one of two metrology laboratories within the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). The laboratory supports the NIST mission by serving as the national reference laboratory for measurements in the chemical, biological and material sciences. Our activities range from fundamental and applied research on the composition, structure and properties of industrial, biological and environmental materials and processes, to the development and dissemination of tools including reference measurement procedures, certified reference materials, critically evaluated data, and best practice guides that help assure measurement quality. This research and measurement services support areas which include innovative nanoscale research which is of national importance. This group utilizes a JEOL 7800 Scanning Electron Microscope which requires maintenance and repair.
The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) intends to negotiate on a sole source basis, under the authority of FAR 13.106-1(b) (1), with the Jeol USA, Inc located in Peabody, MA, for maintenance of this equipment.
Sole Source justification is based on the following:
Market research has shown that Jeol is the sole responsible source for service for this instrument. Jeol has in writing acknowledge that: JEOL USA, INC. is the sole factory authorized provider of service and sales in the United States and Canada. There are no third parties that have priority access to replacement parts and may actually damage equipment and void any warranties.
