This synthesis study will be conducted by a firm and overseen jointly bythe evaluation units of the four climate funds, namely the TechnicalEvaluation Reference Group of the Adaptation Fund (AF-TERG), the Evaluationand Learning Initiative of the Climate Investment Funds (CIF E&LInitiative), the Independent Evaluation Unit of the Green Climate Fund(GCF IEU), and the Independent Evaluation Office of the GlobalEnvironment Facility (GEF IEO). For further background regarding the FourFunds work in Forestry, refer to the Annex of this EoI.The four climate funds have collectively supported numerousforestry-related projects aimed at improving resilience, adaptive capacity, andcarbon sequestration while addressing deforestation and land degradationchallenges (see Annex for more details). These projects contribute to globalclimate change mitigation and adaptation goals. Given the increasing complexityof evaluating climate change interventions, Artificial Intelligence (AI) offerssignificant potential to enhance evaluation processes by synthesizing largedatasets, identifying trends, and generating actionable insights. This pilotstudy seeks to explore how AI can be applied to this type of evaluations whileaddressing challenges such as data quality, methodological limitations, andcapacity gaps.This study aims to inform stakeholders by synthesizing evaluativeevidence, lessons learned, and conclusions from evaluations and relevantknowledge products generated by the Four Funds and their evaluation units. Thissynthesis will focus on forestry-related projects across four climate fundswhile also assessing AI's role in enhancing evaluation practices. On one side,the study will conduct synthesis of evidence from projects funded by thesefunds, specifically targeting forestry-related mitigation and adaptationefforts.
