Description:
The Philippines faces a signifi cant challenge in reducing its maternal mortality ratio, a critical public health priority. To address this, the Department of Health (DOH) has launched the ambitious "28 for 28 by 28" initiative, aiming to establish 28 new BUCAS (Bagong Urgent Care and Ambulatory Services) centers by 2028. These centers are strategically positioned to bridge healthcare gaps and signifi cantly improve maternal health outcomes across the nation. UNFPA Philippines is a committed partner in this endeavor, supporting the DOH by leveraging investments to mobilize additional resources. A cornerstone of this support is a $500,000 investment from the Strategic Investment Facility (SIF). This SIF funding, in partnership with the Asian Development Bank (ADB), is dedicated to providing technical assistance for the DOH's priority projects, directly enabling the effective establishment and operation of BUCAS centers. The technical assistance provided through the SIF, as part of the joint UNFPA-DOH-ADB workplan, is designed to build a robust foundation for the BUCAS initiative. This begins with a comprehensive formative assessment to ensure the BUCAS implementation is evidence-based and tailored to local needs. The fi ndings will directly inform the development of a Manual of Standards.
