Title: Sources Sought Notice for Work Platform Safety Improvements
The purpose of this sources sought notice is to conduct market research and identify potential sources of commercial products/services that satisfy the Government-s anticipated needs.
BACKGROUND
The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), has maintained and operated six (6) deadweight machines (DWM-s) since 1965. Thousands of measurements, through countless force calibrations, have been performed over the lifespan of these machines. The three largest deadweight machines have movable work platforms built around the platens of the machines to assist in the setup and performance of theses calibrations. Two of these have recently been replaced. However, the work platform that services the 1000 klbf dead weight machine is original to when the machine was installed and is being targeted to be upgraded as some components are possibly deteriorating and it lacks many safety features which are now incorporated in modern lifting systems.
General Requirements
Install two electrical outlets (120 VAC) one on each side of the working platform.
Install supplemental lighting around the working platform to illuminate the area around the moveable platen.
Install lighting underneath elevator for better illumination when working underneath (when elevator is raised).
Install a lift assist (spring or shock etc.) to the platform trap door assembly.
Install a mid-rail around elevator guard rails to meet current OSHA spacing guidelines (to match existing aluminum for aesthetics)
Replace gear oil in all gear boxes on the lifting assembly
Grease and check all fittings, chain sprockets, and wheel assemblies on the lifting assemblies.
Inspect and replace lifting chains if necessary.
Inspect chain sprockets and replace if necessary.
Inspect wheel assemblies and replace if necessary
